The Oncology Clinical Pharmacy Specialist is responsible for ensuring the safe, appropriate, and cost-effective use of anti-cancer and oncology/hematology supportive care medications. He/she provides expertise on drug therapy initiation and monitoring to all customer groups served by Mercy Cancer Center, working collaboratively with other health care professionals and patients to devise the most appropriate drug treatment regimens. The role of the clinical pharmacy specialist sometimes extends outside the Cancer Center, so he/she can share their specialized knowledge with other network hospitals, clinics, and care settings.
A. Participates in multi-disciplinary patient care huddle and/or other patient care activities to promote safe and effective medication use.
B. Counsels patients and caregivers on the dosage, route of administration, possible adverse effects, safe handling and waste disposal, and at-home monitoring of their drug treatments.
C. Serves as a member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee for oncology/hematology drug review
D. Serves as a preceptor to PGY1 pharmacy residents (elective care rotation)
1. Completion of the requirements for a Pharm.D. is required
2. Iowa pharmacist licensure, either by examination or reciprocity, is required
1. PGY2 Oncology residency training is required or equivalent clinical experience in oncology setting
2. Board of Pharmacy Specialties Oncology certification is required within 24 months of hire
