Under the direction of Pharmacy Supervisor, provides direct supervision and scheduling in the pharmacy for pharmacy technicians. Assist management with creating and implementing service standards for the technicians to coordinate the work flow and pharmacy staffing for best efficiency.
Coordinates with the pharmacist to provide timely, efficient, cost effective, and appropriate pharmaceutical and nutritional care to the patient while avoiding duplication and waste. Receives and organizes physician and dietitian orders and prescriptions; interprets orders by utilizing medical terminology and generic and trade names of medications. Performs calculations for preparation of dose; fills medication orders and prescriptions, attaches proper name and medication labels; refers completed product to pharmacist for checking and countersigning when medication is not filled by automated medication distribution system. Performs calculations and prepares sterile products using aseptic technique which complies with departmental standards, policies, and procedures. Operates automated medication distribution system and provides training to new employees. Prepackages and labels liquid and solid medications from bulk stock for unit dose distribution or to shelf size containers; repackages unit dose packages for use in the automated distribution system; maintains an adequate inventory. Delivers and exchanges cart-fill envelopes to nursing units at scheduled times; removes medication from medication cart on floor when patients are discharged. Completes paperwork required for the dispensing, inventory, and proper reporting of controlled substances. Provides input regarding technician performance, assists with the performance appraisals of the staff, and helps set goals. Works with Management staff to review appropriate job descriptions and competencies. Provides appropriate training, re-training and cross training to the staff of the department to ensure a smooth operation and updates the training needs as necessary. Orients new technicians to the work areas. Prioritizes, initiates, and oversees all the work functions of the technician staff and ensures that all services are provided to the best level possible. Tracks staff attendance and assists with disciplines; coaches and mentors the staff. Assists with scheduling and convening monthly technician staff meetings, including preparing the agenda and writing the minutes. Work is typically performed in a clinical environment.
