This is the full performance level for pharmacy technicians. Employees at this grade level serve as staff pharmacy technicians receiving little guidance from more experienced staff members for more complex patients and procedures, and require minimal supervision. The call center pharmacy technician is located within the Birmingham VA call center. The call center pharmacy technician will provide direct and comprehensive telephone support for Veteran patients. Functional responsibilities include providing medication information and provide customer service aligned with the overall mission, vision, and goals of the VA. The primary function will be to process patient requests appropriately, applying knowledge of pharmacy practice, VHA national scheduling guidelines, VA regulations, outpatient pharmacy and hospital procedures while seeking assistance from clinical staff when requests are beyond the technician's scope of practice. This position has a strong emphasis on telephone customer care. The employee is responsible for performing a variety of complex technical functions in the pharmacy, which require the application of extensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals and pharmacy practices. The employee will function with the clinical guidance of a licensed pharmacist and will be expected to perform supportive functions independently. The incumbent is expected to maintain a high degree of accurate productivity and performance when performing critical functions. When rotating through the medical center pharmacy to maintain his/her competency the additional duties may include setting up/filling medications for dispensing and labeling all medications appropriately for dispensing to patients, wards or clinics; including all applicable auxiliary labels.
