This is above the full performance level for pharmacy technicians and requires that the technician acquire and maintain Pharmacy Technician Certification. Employees at this grade level serve as inpatient pharmacy technicians receiving little guidance from more experienced staff members or more complex patients and tasks while requiring minimal supervision. This position functions in the acute care inpatient pharmacy, University Drive Division. This position is to function in the acute care inpatient pharmacies, primarily in support of COVID-19 vaccination efforts at both the University Drive and Heinz divisions. As a Pharmacy Technician, major duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Reads and interprets inpatient orders, obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form; determines proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medications; affixes proper label; and records required data on dispensing document. Prepares intravenous solutions (sterile products), total parenteral nutrition, dialysis solutions, etc with review by a pharmacist and maintains and demonstrates IV competency in accordance with USP 797 requirements. Fills unit dose carts and may perform final review of medication (prepared by another technician) to be dispensed to inpatient areas. Inventories and replenishes emergency carts without a second review. Collects drug use evaluation data for quality improvement purposes. Operates and maintains complicated pharmacy equipment. Compounds and/or reconstitutes oral or external medications (non-sterile) without a second review. This includes calculating and converting to proper weights and measures the amount of drug or solution to be used. Functions as back-up narcotic technician, servicing Omnicell units, processing controlled substance invoices, etc in the absence of the narcotic technician. Functions as back-up chemotherapy technician, in the absence of the chemotherapy technician. After order(s) are reviewed by a pharmacist for therapeutic propriety, reviews orders for technical accuracy and converts the order, if necessary, so that the item dispensed corresponds to the drug and dose ordered. Performs final verification of simple, non-sterile compounds prepared by lower level technicians. On off-tours, dispenses medication in ambulatory care, pass or discharge situations after a final check by a pharmacist. Answers questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution. Identifies basic therapeutic problems such as duplicate therapy with drugs in the same class and alerts the pharmacist to the possible need for clinical intervention. Assists in total quality improvement activities by participating in medical center and service process assessment and action teams and continually seeks to improve services. Conducts monthly ward inspection of patient care areas. Maintains, verifies, stocks, and replaces outdates in assigned areas. Monitors ward stock in patient care areas, relays this information to the Pharmacy Procurement Technician. Orders inventory needs during his/her absence. This also includes placing stock in proper storage areas, rotating stock on shelves, and removing/replacing outdated items. Monitors refrigerator temperature on a daily basis in assigned areas. Performs all the duties of lower graded technicians, if required. General Duties: Assists in other patient care areas as deemed necessary to maintain the consistency of overall pharmacy services and other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Primarily 8 hour shifts between the hours of 6am- 4:30pm; occasional nights, weekends, and holidays.; This position is not to exceed 9/30/2021.
