Under the supervision of a pharmacist, pharmacy technicians perform routine pharmacy functions including receiving prescriptions from patients in writing or electronically from physicians. Examples of duties performed but are not limited to include the following: Inpatient Utilizes knowledge of agency regulations and policies concerning pharmaceutical practices in performing day to day functions. Performs duties involved in all facets of unit dose drug distribution, in all areas of the inpatient pharmacy. Prepares and fills clinic/ward order requests including those for controlled substances. All dispensing is documented in the VISTA program. Conducts controlled substance inventories and maintains inventory records. Assures medical center inspectors complete all assignments and notifies chairman of Controlled Substance Committee of any delinquent situations. Maintains food work flow patterns to keep outpatient prescription waiting time to an average of 30 minutes or less. Conducts ward inspections by inspecting clinic areas for proper storage of medications and documents findings on inspection report form. Renews all licenses and certifications on time. Competencies and required classes are all done in a timely manner.. Rotates to other pharmacy sections, such as outpatient pharmacy and other areas of the inpatient pharmacy, on an "as needed" basis, when assigned. Uses discretion in appropriately safeguarding confidential information. Complies with all HIPAA and patient confidentiality regulations. Is fully aware of regulatory issues (state, federal, VA, DEA, life safety, etc.) including policy and procedures so that all activities adhere to expected standards. Automation Incumbent provides specialized technical support to inpatient and outpatient pharmacy staff regarding the use of automated medication distribution systems. Sets up, adjusts, and maintains the operation of automated medication dispensing devices. Sets up, adjusts, calibrates and maintains accessories and supplies for automated medication dispensing devices. Performs or schedules basic and routine service maintenance to automated dispensing devices at times least disruptive to patient care. Serves as technical advisor and trainer to other pharmacy staff and other facility department staff (i.e. Nursing) in the operation, calibration, and maintenance of automated pharmacy equipment and devices. Support and advises the Pharmacy Informatics on any issues/topics related to automation devices. Troubleshoots all equipment malfunctions and initiates service calls in accordance with pharmacy's contingency plan as appropriate for the Inpatient Pharmacy and Outpatient Pharmacies. Maintains control records, collecting data on any deviation in equipment accuracy, operation, or suitability. Recognizes and notifies the Supervisor of such deviations. This includes collecting technical data necessary for the purchase of new equipment, collecting and reporting quality improvement data in a format useful for pharmacy management and providing suggestions or other information that may be useful for improving the efficiency of the pharmacy's automated dispensing systems. This includes and not limited to, expiration dates, par level adjustments, medication adjustments, etc. Work Schedule: Full-Time, Varies Shifts: This medical center operates 24 hours, 7 days per week and you may be required to work days, evenings, nights, holidays, and or weekends, to include modification in shifts and or tours of duty, to meet medical center and patient care needs Financial Disclosure Report: Not required
